The Sustainable City pLAn is a roadmap for a Los Angeles that is environmentally healthy, economically prosperous, and equitable in opportunity for all – now and over the next 20 years.

On March 2, 2017, Mayor Eric Garcetti released the second annual progress report on his Sustainable City pLAn, which shows early achievement of more than two-thirds of the city’s 2017 goals under the first comprehensive environmental plan in City history. You can learn more about the pLAn, and see the progress report online at http://plan.lamayor.org/

Major early accomplishments include creating over 20,000 green jobs, reducing water use per capita by 20 percent, building the nation’s largest pure battery electric vehicle municipal fleet, and installing 225 MW of solar power—the most of any American city.

“My Sustainable City pLAn is delivering results, because creating the city and economy of the future begins with a vision and a comprehensive strategy — and we could not have achieved the gains of the past two years without this blueprint,” said Mayor Garcetti. “We are a healthier and more prosperous city today because we set bold targets and held ourselves accountable for making progress that Angelenos can see and feel.”

The City also took action in 2016 against pressing environmental challenges. The mayor signed the landmark ‘Clean Up Green Up’ ordinance, which provides new tools to fight pollution for the communities of Boyle Heights, Wilmington, and Pacoima. And to help address Angelenos’ concerns related to the Aliso Canyon methane leak disaster and the legacy of oil drilling across Los Angeles, Mayor Garcetti appointed Uduak-Joe Ntuk to the role of petroleum administrator — the City’s first since the 1980s.

Mayor Garcetti introduced the pLAn in 2015 to guide Los Angeles toward an environmentally healthy, economically prosperous, and equitable future for a city expected to grow by 500,000 residents over the next 20 years. The pLAn laid out ambitious short term and long term targets in 14 categories revolving around the concepts of the environment, the economy, and equity.

Building on the progress made as L.A. becomes more sustainable, an updated version of the pLAn with revised and new goals is scheduled for release by early 2019.
