Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr Day in Los Angeles

On January 21, 2019 Council President Herbert J. Wesson, District 10, Councilman Marqueece Harris-Dawson, District 8 and the Department of Cultural Affairs will be celebrating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at the fourth annual Freedom Festival.  Located in the Historic Leimert Park Village, the 2019 Martin Luther King Freedom Festival celebrates the legacy of Dr. King through music, arts, health, and activism.

This year, the Empowerment Tent will have a unique feature, Destination Crenshaw, our 1.3-mile, open-air, public art and cultural experience will tell the previously untold stories of the extraordinary contributions Black Angelenos have made to Los Angeles and the world! The Destination Crenshaw Open House will showcase design renderings and plans by the architecture team at Perkins + Will, plus a virtual reality experience of the proposed Sankofa Park. Destination Crenshaw will tell the previously untold stories of the extraordinary contributions Black Angelenos have made to Los Angeles and the world.  We want you to be a part of it!

This year’s theme, The Future is Ours, reminds us that we all have the power and the responsibility to shape our country and neighborhoods. Dr. King showed us the way, and now it’s up to us to build our future. You won't want to miss this one of a kind experience!

The 32nd Annual Kingdom Day Parade
Starting at 10:00 AM at Western Ave and Martin Luther King Jr Blvd, the parade will proceed west of MLK to Crenshaw and south on Crenshaw to Vernon. The parade will also be broadcast live on ABC 7 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Please visit https://kingdomdayparade.org/ for more details. 

The Martin Luther King Jr  Freedom Festival at Leimert Park Villiage
Presented by the City of Los Angeles, The Martin Luther King Jr. Festival at Leimert Park Village will run from 11 AM to 5 PM and will feature live music, food trucks, and art installations.  Please visit http://www.leimertparkvillage.org/ for more details.
