It is estimated that several trillion cigarette butts are littered worldwide every year. That's billions of cigarettes flicked, one at a time, on our sidewalks, beaches, nature trails, gardens, and other public places every single day. Cigarette filters are made of cellulose acetate tow, not cotton, and can take over ten years to decompose. Cigarette filters also release harmful chemicals into the environment and into our water supply. Littered cigarettes are also a leading cause of wildfires. And, of course, littered cigarette butts make our communities look filthy!
There are public education campaigns that specifically target discarded cigarette butts on a state and worldwide level. One starting point can be found here.
