The recycling robot has been the mascot for the Bureau of Sanitation Solids Resources programs since 2003 when the Bureau conducted a mascot and slogan contest among 3rd, 4th, & 5th grade LAUSD students. “Recycle Man” (Picture of Recycle Man) submitted by Dean Hutkin, 3rd grader from Balboa Magnet School (Picture of Dean Hutkin), was chosen out of hundreds of entries. The recycling robot and his famous slogan submitted by Jose Avila, 4th grader at Nevin Avenue Elementary School, “Don’t just stand there, recycle something” appeared on Bureau publications, shirts, and other give aways and even Bureau Director’s business cards!
In 2006, the recycling robot, now blue in color to match the ubiquitous City of Los Angeles blue recycling bins, ”came to life” when Lloyd Gaines from the Solid Resources Collections Division and his wife Dorita brought the recycling robot out to meet, greet, and teach kids and adults about recycling at the Bureau of Sanitation Open Houses. Another contest was held at the open houses to officially name the recycling robot and out of hundreds of entries, “Mr. Recycle”, submitted by James Troung age 13, was selected as the winner.
Mr. Recycle makes appearances throughout the year in parades and events such as Keep America Beautiful, Keep LA Clean, and even makes presentations at LAUSD schools and the Bureau open houses to help promote the recycling message.
Along with his new sidekick Robo-Blue, Mr. Recycle continues to captures the attention of kids and adults and helps educate them on ways to reduce waste and the benefits of recycling.
