Spring Street Doors

(48 K)

The great bronze doors of the Spring Street entrance to City Hall were created by Henry Lion, an Armenian immigrant who settled in Los Angeles. Project Restore oversaw their restoration in 1992.

These monumental doors feature six hand-carved bas-relief panels commemorating significant dates and events in the history of Los Angeles, from its discovery in 1769 to the completion of its harbor in 1915. The original finish protecting the bronze doors, damaged by airborne pollution and years of heavy use, was restored to a uniform black patina protected by microcrystalline wax.
