The City of Los Angeles recently adopted a new ordinance related to water conservation. The Department of Recreation and Parks along with other City agencies, fully endorses these new water saving measures and will continue to implement conservation methods in our parks.
The actual text of the Water Conservation Ordinance is now available for public review at:

The Department of Recreation and Parks offers a wide range of park services and recreational opportunities throughout the City of Los Angeles. To accomplish this, the Department must care for and maintain over 15,000 acres of parkland in over 400 neighborhood and community parks. In order to meet the current mandates of the City’s water conservation ordinance, certain new rules apply to the Department’s operations.
| • |
Using water on hard surfaces such as sidewalks, walkways, driveways, tennis courts or parking areas except for public health and safety purposes |
| |
|
| • |
Allowing excess water from sprinklers to puddle or run off the target area |
| |
|
| • |
Using water to clean, fill, or maintain decorative fountains unless the water is part of a recycling system |
| |
|
| • |
Serving drinking water in our concession operated eating establishments, unless requested by the customer |
| |
|
| • |
Leaks to go uncorrected |
| • |
The irrigation of turf and landscape areas is not allowed during the hours of 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. |
| |
|
| • |
Watering must be limited to no more than 15 minutes per station for rotating sprinklers and 10 minutes per station for other types of sprinklers |
| |
|
| • |
Landscape watering during rain is not allowed |
| |
|
| • |
No washing/rinsing of vehicles is allowed unless the hose is fitted with a functioning self-closing nozzle |
The Department of Recreation and Parks already uses reclaimed water at many of its parks and golf courses. We have also been systematically installing “Smart” irrigation systems throughout the park system. Listed below are some additional ways that our employees will help to conserve water.
| • |
Regularly checking facilities for leaks and necessary repairs |
| |
|
| • |
Maintenance staff will reduce water use by repairing leaks and adjusting sprinklers properly |
| |
|
| • |
Eliminate hosing-down of hard surfaces, and implementing the use of the “water broom” for necessary cleaning of those surfaces |
| |
|
| • |
Irrigating parks only after 4 p.m. and before 9 a.m. |
| |
|
| • |
Employees can also report any observation of water waste for immediate correction |
The only exceptions to these rules are in cases where public health and safety may be affected
