| Plaza Community Center |
| Councilmember Huizar is recognized by Plaza Community Center for his leadership and commitment to a healthy Boyle Heights at the First Annual Night of Laughter and Tacos. Plaza Community Center provides numerous health care services to the neediest people in Boyle Heights. Through funding efforts lead by Councilmember Huizar, Plaza Community Center will open a brand new three story facility that will allow them to double the services they provide in Boyle Heights. |
| Festival de la Gente |
| Councilmember Huizar thanks the thousands of people that attended the 8th Annual Festival de la Gente A Day of the Dead Celebration at the historic 6th Street Bridge. The festival is the largest Day of the Dead celebration in the United States. The event featured live music, art and car expositions. |
| Wilson High School Scoreboard |
| Councilmember Huizar unveiled the brand new scoreboard at Wilson High School during halftime of the Wilson Mulesvs. Franklin Panthers game. The new state-of-the-art scoreboard marked the 70th anniversary of Wilson High School. Councilman Huizar also recognized Principal Roberto Martinez for his commitment to providing a great education to Wilson High School students. |
| Gang Violence |
| Councilman Huizar and the Ad Hoc Committee on Gang Violence held a community meeting at Our Lady of Talpa Church to discuss gang violence in Boyle Heights. Public safety and providing the youth with real alternatives to gang violence is Councilmember Huizars top priority. The meeting was attended by more than 300 residents who provided input and insight into the current gang situation in Boyle Heights. |
| Ramona Gardens Community Clean-up |
| Councilmember Huizar and more than 150 residents volunteered to clean alleyways, streets, and other areas in Ramona Gardens. This clean-up was organized to support the weekly bulky item pick-up program that Councilmember Huizar has every third Saturday of the month in Boyle Heights. The event was organized by L.A. Voice, Northeast Trees and residents Lou Calenche and Yanira Rivas. |
| Salesian Homecoming Game |
| Councilmember Huizar starts the football game with a symbolic coin toss at the Salesian High School homecoming. Salesian High School played Bellarmine-Jefferson High School. Councilmember Huizar will also be donating 20 metal barricades for their football program. |
| El Sereno Parking Grove |
| Councilmember Huizar breaks ground on the long awaited El Sereno Parking Grove at Farmdale Elementary. The El Sereno Parking Grove, a soon-to-be fully paved and landscaped parking lot, will replace a decades-old dirt lot between Farmdale Elementary School and the El Sereno Recreation Center. The students of Farmdale held a special ceremony to thank Councilmember Huizar and the Department of Recreation and Parks. |
| School Safety Prosecutor |
| Councilmember Huizar announces the launch of the School Safety Prosecutor Program at Roosevelt High School. City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo, LAUSD Board President Monica Garcia, and Captain Blake Chow welcomed Ms. Veronica de Alba, the new School Safety Prosecutor assigned to Roosevelt High School. The program will focus on investigating and prosecuting crimes committed in safe school zones (1,000 feet around the targeted high school) and establishing working partnerships with law enforcement and the community. |
| Eagle Rock Music Festival |
| Thousands of Northeast Los Angeles residents gathered for a day full of great food, arts and music at the 9th Annual Eagle Rock Music Festival. The Eagle Rock Music Festival is one of the largest free community-based music festivals in all of Los Angeles. This year the festival featured a variety of musical talents ranging from Mariachi to Punk Rock music on four different stages. |
| Feria de la Salud |
| Councilmember Huizar co-sponsored the Feria de la Saludor Health Fair in Boyle Heights. The Fair marked the kick-off of the 7th Annual Semana Binacional de la Salud. Councilmember Huizar recognized Altamed, Healthnet and the Mexican Consulate of Los Angeles for their contributions to the Fair. The event featured free health screenings and two mobile clinics. |
