ER High School Check
Councilman Huizar congratulates the Eagles football team for defending their second City Invitational Championship this year. The Councilman presented a $6,200 check to the Eagle Rock High School team fulfilling a commitment he made earlier in the season to purchase new coaching headsets if they won the championship.

Veteran's Parade
Hundreds of Boyle Heights and East Los Angeles Veterans joined Councilman Huizar for the 3rd Annual Boyle Heights Veteran's Day Parade in November. This year's theme was Saluting our Veterans." Those who fought bravely in World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam War, Gulf War, and the Iraq War were represented in the parade. Councilman Huizar also honored a dozen Boyle Heights veterans for their distinguished service including William "Bill" Langsford and Ross Valencia.

Playground Award Dedication
Councilmember Huizar recognized the Anne and Kirk Douglas Foundation for providing El Sereno Elementary School with new playground equipment. The Anne & Kirk Douglas Playground Award supports and encourages Los Angeles public school communities in creating playgrounds that will be the keystones of campus revitalization. The playground award also gives the city's children the fulfilling experiences and opportunities they deserve.

Industrial Plant Protest
Councilmember Huizar joined over 500 Boyle Heights residents and local advocates Terry Cano, Resurrection Neighborhood Watch and Father John Moretta, Resurrection Church and marched to protest a state-authorized permit to Industrial Service Oil Company (ISOCI). The permit would allow ISOCI to expand its operation by nearly 40 percent. The hazardous waste facility is located at 1700 S. Soto Street in Boyle Heights.

Walking School Bus Launch
Councilmember Huizar announced the launch of a new school safety program  the Walking School Bus at Murchison Elementary in Ramona Gardens. The volunteer program allows parents to meet students at an assigned location and walk them to school. The effort is part of the school safety initiative that includes other programs such as Safety Valet, KidWatch, and Safe Corridors.

YES to Education Community Walk
Councilmember Huizar promoted higher education and spoke to hundreds of youth and their families at the Inner City Struggle (ICS)  Say Yes to Education Community Walk. ICS is an organization dedicated to providing educational equality and equal opportunities to access higher education to students from East Los Angeles.

SEA Gala Dinner
Councilmember Huizar recognized Angela Sambrano and Alicia Lara (United Way of Greater Los Angeles) for their work to improve the lives of disadvantaged and troubled youth at the Soledad Enrichment Action (SEA) gala dinner. SEA began more than 30 years ago as a support group for mothers who lost their children to gang violence in East Los Angeles. Today, it has evolved into an alternative high-school-of-last-resort with locations in over twenty of Los Angeles poorest neighborhoods.

East L.A. Football Classic
Councilmember Huizar distributed $2,000 in college scholarships for the Fourth Annual Jos Huizar Excellence in Education Scholarship at the East Los Angeles High School Football Classic. The scholarships were given to two Garfield and three Roosevelt High School students who displayed academic achievement and a desire to use their education to give back to their communities.

Legend of Creepy Collis
Over 5,000 El Sereno residents attended the decades old Legend of Creepy Collis Community Halloween Haunt where Councilmember Huizar sponsored a costume contest, face painting booths, balloon and candy giveaways. With more than six blocks of decorated streets and houses, The Legend of Creepy Collis is considered one of the most unique community Halloween Haunts in all of Los Angeles.

Nightmare on 1st Street
Councilmember Huizar and hundreds of children and families gathered at the Roybal Family Youth Center for the Second Annual Nightmare on First Street. The event was a community Halloween Haunt and provided thousands of children with a safe place to trick-or-treat. The event had a haunted house and costume contest among other family activities.
