| Yosemite Tennis Courts Facelift |
| Councilmember José Huizar and the Eagle Rock High School Tennis Team broke ground on the much anticipated facelift of the Yosemite Recreation Center Tennis Courts. For more than 20 years the tennis courts have been used by thousands of students, residents, and local youth without being refurbished.
As a member of the Citys Budget and Finance Committee, Councilmember Huizar fought for and won the necessary funds to refurbish the courts. The project is expected to last three months and will include leveling, adding new poles, nets, and enhancing accessibility for the disabled.

| Mock Funeral Vernon Power Plant Protest |
| Councilmember José Huizar led more than two hundred community members in a mock funeral procession recently to protest against the City of Vernons proposed power plant. The mock funeral procession included a hearse and community members dressed in black to symbolize the likely increase in community deaths due to the large number of toxic emissions the plant would produce.
Residents of Boyle Heights are concerned about dangerously high amounts of pollution and the particulate matter, which could travel from the new plant and affect neighboring communities.

| Gladys Park Activities Skid Row Children |
| Councilmember José Huizar announced a program that allows the estimated 100 children living on Skid Row the chance to participate in sports and art projects at Gladys Park in downtown. The Citys Recreation and Parks Department, LAPD, Para Los Niños and S.R.O Housing, joined Councilmember Huizar in the announcement.
The Councilmember says that any child deserves a safe place to play after school, regardless of where they live or their economic status, whose district includes the park at Gladys and Sixth streets. Every Friday from 3 to 5 p.m., Department of Recreation and Parks will bring sports equipment and art supplies to Gladys Park on Skid Row. Additional police officers will patrol the park while the children are at play.

| Hollywood Christmas Parade |
| Councilman Huizar, his wife Richelle Rios and his daughters Emilia and Isabella were among those greeted with clapping, cheers and whistling by parade watchers at the Hollywood Santa Parade. This years parade Grand Marshal was TV icon Bob Barker. Councilman Huizar joined his fellow Councilmembers in providing financial support to save the annual parade which would have been canceled otherwise. More than 125,000 people attended this year's parade.

| Multnomah School Mural |
| Councilmember Huizar dedicated a new Soaring Eagle student mural at Multnomah Elementary School in El Sereno. Principal Beth Bythrow and artist Daniel Ruiz joined Councilman Huizar at the dedication.
For years, El Sereno residents considered the soaring eagle mural a symbol of the community. Four years ago the original mural was painted over during the school renovation. In October 2006 Councilman Huizar presented a $10,000 check at a student assembly to paint new school mural.

| Councilmember José Huizar and volunteers distributed more than 800 turkeys and holiday dinner fixings to eligible El Sereno community members who needed extra assistance this time of year. The event received generous support from Food 4 Less and Barrio Planners.
Operation Gobble-Gobble provided qualifying families pre-registered for a voucher from among six local participating non-profit organizations. The families presented their voucher and received a turkey and trimming in exchange.

Operation Gobble-Gobble provided a family in need with a turkey and trimmings a full Thanksgiving dinner. Qualifying families pre-registered for a voucher from among 10 local participating non-profit organizations. The families presented their voucher and received a turkey and trimming in exchange.

| East L.A. Christmas Parade |
| Thousands of families and children from East Los Angeles joined Councilman Huizar in the 33rd Annual East Los Angeles Christmas Parade. This year the parade also featured family activities in Santas Fiesta Lane, which included food and childrens booths, music and live entertainment. |
| La Purisima Neighborhood Watch |
| Councilmember Huizar expressed his appreciation to over 100 La Purisima Neighborhood Watch and Community Clean-up Program volunteers for their continued efforts to beautify Boyle Heights. After a recent Sunday mass, Councilmember Huizar served menudo to volunteers. |
| 17th Annual Mariachi Festival |
| Councilmember Huizar hosted the 17th Annual Mariachi Festival Legends of Mariachi at Mariachi Plaza. World famous mariachi artists Jose Hernandez y su Mariachi Sol de Mexico and the all-female Mariachi Reina de Los Angeles were among the featured performers at the Festival. Councilman Huizar also recognized Frank Villalobos for his assistance in organizing the event every year. |
