Tennis Courts Reopening & Egg Hunt
Councilmember José Huizar hosted a community egg hunt to celebrate the grand reopening of the Yosemite Recreation Center tennis courts. For more than 20 years, thousands of Eagle Rock High School students, residents, and local youth have used the tennis courts, which have worn down over time. The three-month refurbishing project included leveling the old tennis courts, adding new poles, nets, and enhancing accessibility for the disabled.

Evergreen Park Spring Festival and Egg H
Councilmember José Huizar joined more than 400 children and their family members as he hosted the first Evergreen Spring Festival and Egg Hunt in Boyle Heights. The family festival included a traditional egg hunt. Six lucky children who found a golden egg won a bicycle or skateboard as a grand prize. The event also featured community education booths and entertainment from the Roosevelt High School Mariachis.

40th Annv. of East LA Walk Outs March
Councilmember Huizar was joined by more than 4,000 people, former student leaders and elected officials for a march to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the East Los Angeles High School Walkouts. On March 6-8, 1968, more than 20,000 high school students in the greater Los Angeles area walked out of their schools to demand a better education, an equal opportunity to take part in college prep courses, and the right to learn about Chicano culture. Thanks to the brave acts of these young men and women, students in Los Angeles have been able to reap the benefits of a better, more diverse educational system.

Grand Reopening: Million Dollar Theater
Councilmember Huizar was joined by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, world famous Latino artists such as Angelica Maria, and thousands of fans to reopen the Million Dollar Theater in downtown Los Angeles. The Million Dollar Theater is the first to reopen its doors since Councilmember Huizar announced his vision for Brining Back Broadway.

Boyle Heights Community Cleanup
Councilmember Huizar joined more than 100 volunteers from Union de Vecinos to clean up the alleys at Fickett Street and Boulder Avenue in Boyle Heights. Councilmember Huizar and Union de Vecinos are working together to beautify Boyle Heights and create a sense of pride in their neighborhood.

Boyle Heights Toxic Waste Site Appeals
Councilmember José Huizar testified at a hearing in front of more than 300 Boyle Heights residents against a proposed state-authorized permit, which would allow a hazardous waste facility in Boyle Heights to expand. The facility is located near the Los Angeles River and in close proximity to families and their homes. Councilmember Huizar shares the residents belief that the expansion would pose a significant health and public safety risk to neighborhoods close to the facility.

El Sereno Stallion Awards Banquet
Councilmember Huizar honored Wilson High School football coach Robert Montalvo and presented to him a lifetime achievement award during the annual El Sereno Stallion awards banquet. Coach Montalvo is retiring this year after 25 years with Wilson High Schools football, which he led to five conference championships.

Salesian High School 50th Anniversary
Councilmember Huizar joined Principal Samuel Robles, and Father Jim Nieblas in welcoming more than 300 community leaders and former Salesian High School alumni to the kick-off of the schools 50th Anniversary Celebration. Councilmember Huizar graduated from Salesian High School in 1988.

An Evening of Hope Boyle Heights Techn
Councilmember Huizar joined Mayor Villaraigosa, singer Pepe Aguilar, actor Cheech Marin, and radio personality Talaya Trigueros amongst others for the Second Annual An Evening of Hope fundraiser benefiting the Boyle Heights Technology Youth Center. The Center helps youth achieve their educational, employment, and personal goals.

Bringing Back Broadway Announcement
Joined by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, property owners of the largest theater district west of the Mississippi, and more than 300 community leaders, Councilmember Huizar unveiled a vision for Bringing Back Broadway and announced an initial $36.5 million investment for projects that will restore downtown's historic Broadway District to its former glory.
