Comite Mex Civico Patriotico 75th Ann.
Councilmember Jose Huizar honored Comite Mexicano Civico Patriotico at City Hall in recognition of the organization's 75th anniversary on Thursday, October 26, 2006. The organization was established in 1931 by a group of local Mexican entrepeneurs who wished to promote and celebrate historic Mexican holidays and events here in Los Angeles.

El Sereno Sr. Ctr. Check Presentation
Councilmember Huizar presented a $5,000 check to the El Sereno Sr. Center during its annual Halloween dance and luncheon. The funds will be used to purchase new blinds, a new sound system, a projector and to repair the pool table at the Sr. Center.

Union de Vecinos Rally
Councilmember Huizar and Union de Vecinos join the mothers of injured victims and others to announce the installation of a new pedestrian crosswalk at the intersection of Cesar Chavez Avenue and Fickett Street in Boyle Heights.

SEIU Rally
Councilmember Huizar participated in an SEIU Rally to encourage and support school employees to continue their fight for a fair contract.

UC Berkeley Prospective Students Event
Councilmember Huizar participated in a UC Berkeley Prospective Students Event sponsored by the California Alumni Association, Chicano/Latino Alumni Club and the Black Alumni Club. The event was hosted for prospective students who are often underrepresented minorities to learn more about admissions, financial aid, academic programs and campus life at Berkeley.

Bushnell Elem. Check Presenation
Councilmember Huizar presented two checks at Bushnell Elementary School: 1) $3500-for the school marquee installation; and 2) $6500-to the artist, J. Michael Walker for doing the art that will appear on the marquee. The event concluded with a groundbreaking ceremony.

El Sereno Library Reading
Councilmember Huizar joined Azteca America Anchor, Jose Martin at El Sereno Library to read to children visiting from Academia Semillas Charter School in El Sereno. The reading event was part of the program "Para Crecer Acercate al Saber"/"To Grow, Get Closer to Knowledge", which is a partnership program between the L.A. Public Library and Azteca America.

Jamaica Event in Boyle Heights
Councilmember Huizar attended the quarterly "Jamaica" Event at Talpa Church in Boyle Heights. The fundraiser event gave the Councilmember an opportunity to greet constituents and enjoy an outing in the community. "Jamaicas" includes carnival rides, food, and entertainment for local residents and members of the Talpa congregation. All proceeds go to the maintenance of the Talpa Church and school.

Million Tree Initiative
Councilmember Huizar participated in Mayor Villaraigosa's "Million Tree Initiative" press conference and emphasized the economic benefits associated with having trees planted in urban areas.

Dia del Bracero
Councilmember Huizar presented a Resolution to the Ex-Braceros on "Dia del Bracero" on 9/29/06. The "Braceros" were the guest workers who participated in the Bracero Program from 1942 to 1967 and did mostly agricultural and railroad work. The Program began with an agreement between Mexico and the United States in August, 1942, due to the massive labor shortage which grew when American men began fighting in World War II.
