$25,000 Reward
Councilmember Huizar took part in a press conference (12.21.06) at the intersection of Eldred Street and Avenue 48 in Highland Park. The purpose of the event was to inform the public of the $25,000 reward being offered to anyone who comes forward with information leading to the identification, apprehension and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the hit and run death of Jose Anguano.

Placita de Dolores Opening
Councilmember Huizar spread the Christmas Spirit with a celebration to dedicate La Placita de Dolores Park and the resurrection of the Native Garden. The two venues are the newest additions of open space for the City of Los Angeles in an area where open space is needed and where local families can spend quality time together.

Stolen Toys at Murchison Elem.
Councilmember Huizar saved the holidays for the children at Murchison Elementary School in Boyle Heights by replacing and distributing dozens of Christmas toys that were stolen from the school on December 13th. The Los Angeles Police Department and LAUSD school police are investigating who may be responsible for the theft of these toys.

Roosevelt Pool Panels
Councilmember Huizar launched the start of construction of more than 450 new wind pool panels to surround the entire Olympic size pool at Roosevelt High School in Boyle Heights (12.11.06) The pool is used not only by Roosevelt students, but also the general public.

Garvanza Skate Park Groundbreaking
Councilmember Huizar launched a groundbreaking event for the new Garvanza Skate Park in Garvanza, Ca. The park is scheduled to be completed by August, 2007.

Miracle on 1st Street
Councilmember Huizar served as the 2006 Grand Marshall of the 25th annual "Miracle on 1st Street" Toy Giveaway in Boyle Heights on Saturday, December 9, 2006. Over 10,000 children and their families stood in line to receive a toy.

Blue Bin Recycling Program
Councilmember Huizar and Mayor Villaraigosa took part in the "Blue Bin Recycling Program" press conference at Sheridan Elementary School in Boyle Heights. The Councilmember and the Mayor both touted great success of the program in helping provide free curbside recycling to all LAUSD schools.

LA's Best Receives $15,000 Check
Councilmember Huizar and Vons presented a $15,000 check to LA's Best. The money will fund LA's Best "BEST Fit" program which provides fun and innovative opportunities for LA's BEST children and their families to increase physical activity, learn healthy habits, make healthy eating choices, and understand and monitor food labels.

Million Word Challenge
Councilmember Huizar helped kick off the "Million Word Challenge," a community-wide campaign promoting a culture of literacy and reading at home and academic achievement in school. The goal is to encourage students to read more than a million words outside the classroom by May, 2007.
