City of Los Angeles - Personnel Department
Preparation Tips and Exercise Program for a Firefighter Career

PREPARATION TIPS

Taking fire technology classes is one very effective way to prepare yourself for a career in the fire service. Classes in fire technology help you in three significant ways: preparation for your entry level interview, preparation for your job as a Firefighter, and preparation for future promotions.

In your entry level interview you will be asked how you have prepared to become a Firefighter. Fire technology classes and a physical fitness program help you to answer this question affirmatively, "I have prepared myself for the position by staying physically fit and gaining an understanding of fire behavior and firefighting."

Becoming a Los Angeles City Firefighter means you are part of a very effective team. Being part of this team requires that you know your job, which doesn't happen overnight or without effort. You must work to develop these skills. Classes offered at many community colleges prepare you to take your place on this team.

Earning a promotion within the Los Angeles City Fire Department is not an easy task. Taking fire technology classes lays the ground work for success. Fire technology classes can range from wildland brush fire control techniques and structure firefighting, to the incident commant structure. These are some of the basic skills one must possess to become an Engineer, Fire Captain, or Battalion Chief. (All promotional positions.)
