GLOSSARY OF TERMS
Certification - a list of names provided to a department filling a vacancy, of those persons who are legally qualified to be eligible for appointment consideration based on their examination results.
Class - a group of positions in various City departments with sufficiently similar duties, responsibilities, and requirements, such that they have the same title and the same examination for employment or promotion.
Continuous Examination - an examination that is open for filing for an indefinite period of time, and during that time, there are several administrations of the test.
Eligible List - a list of names of those persons who have qualified by examination and are eligible for employment consideration. Persons are ranked on the eligible list in the order of their final score in the examination.
Examination - a test or a combination of tests which determine the relative capacity of candidates to discharge the duties and responsibilities of the class in which they are seeking employment.
Examination Announcement - the official
public written notice of an examination. The examination announcement provides
the following information:
Salary;
Duties;
Minimum requirements to participate in the examination;
Last date to file an application to participate in the examination;
Type of examination that will be administered; and
Areas the examination will cover.
Open Examination - any individual who meets the requirements stated on the examination announcement may participate in an open examination.
Promotional Examination - only those individuals
who are current City of Los Angeles employees in the classified civil service
and who are in a lower rank and meet the requirements specified on the examination
announcement may participate in a promotional examination.
