Historic Lows in Crime
"Thanks to the outstanding work of Chief Bratton and the brave men and women of the LAPD, Los Angeles is bucking the national trends. The historic lows in crime are great news for our economy, our families and everyone who lives, works and plays in Los Angeles." - Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa 1/2/08.
Mayor Villaraigosa is working to transform Los Angeles into a world-class model for crime prevention, counter-terrorism, and emergency preparedness, while changing LAPD and LAFD to reflect the highest commitment to diversity, civil liberties, and community trust.
Per capita crime at lowest rate in over 50 years
Overall crime in Los Angeles has dropped during each of the last six years - reaching levels unseen in this city in more than 50 years. In 1956, with a population of 2.3 million, per capita crime was 385 per 10,000 people. In 2007, with an estimated population of 4.2 million, per capita crime decreased to 290 per 10,000.
Gang-Related Homicides Down 26.5% in 2007
In 1992, the City of Los Angeles experienced its highest number of homicides, 1,092. In 2007, there were 216 gang-related murders in Los Angeles - a 26.5% decrease from 2006. This also represented a 49.7% drop from the 430 killings in 1992, the peak year for gang and overall homicides in the city.
South Bureau Criminal Gang Homicide Group
On March 4, 2007, LAPD formed the Operations-South Bureau (OSB) Criminal Gang Homicide Group (CGHG). This team includes personnel from homicide squads in the Southeast, Southwest and 77th Street divisions, and receives additional assistance from the OSB Special Enforcement Unit and the South Bureau Gang Enforcement Detail. The CGHG also benefits from support of the L.A. County Sheriff's Department, the District Attorney's Office, County Probation, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the FBI and Gang Intervention Specialists.
This concerted effort has resulted in a homicide clearance rate of 75% - compared with 52% in 2006 - and a 24.5% drop in homicides in South L.A.
As part of these efforts, and in conjunction with the Mayor's broader anti-gang strategy, gang-related homicides in South L.A. decreased by 25%.
Teamwork Equals Results
"Special recognition and appreciation goes to our Neighborhood Councils, Community -Police Advisory Boards, and Neighborhood Watch for their trust and appreciation of the LAPD. The Department's partnerships with the Mayor, City Council, Los Angeles City Attorney, Los Angeles County District Attorney, along with local, state and federal participation show that working together as a team we can make the City of Los Angeles the largest safe city in America." - Police Chief William Bratton 1/2/08
