MAYOR VILLARAIGOSA ON THE SWINE FLU HEALTH EMERGENCY

Mayor Villaraigosa released the following statement today regarding the local health emergency declared by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors:

As a City we remain vigilant, in constant communication with health agencies at the local, state and federal level.

While currently there is no need for alarm, we are prepared.

The Emergency Management Department has a Pandemic Influenza Continuity of Operations Plan, that serves as a roadmap to respond effectively and ensure that essential city operations are maintained in the event of a pandemic.

There are everyday actions that can help prevent the spread of germs that cause respiratory illnesses like influenza:

      • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.

      • Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.

      • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze.

      • Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.

      • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.

      • Try to avoid close contact with sick people.

      • If you get sick, CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.”
