Getting the Facts
Do we have enough infrastructure to support new growth?

Addressing the need for new infrastructure. The increasing need for improved public infrastructure often comes up in discussions about new housing development. There are many neighborhoods in Los Angeles, especially in areas with high concentrations of poverty, that lack the schools, parks and other infrastructure that help make a community a healthy place to live. The City of Los Angeles recognizes that growth needs to be supported by investment in infrastructure and has developed an infrastructure investment plan to remedy these shortcomings. Likewise, the Los Angeles Unified School District has embarked on an aggressive school building plan with support from several local funding bonds.

The connection between infrastructure and development.
We need more schools, parks and other infrastructure to make our neighborhoods and city more livable. Yet, the inadequate infrastructure in many areas of the city has not prevented our population from growing. In fact, the areas most impacted by school overcrowding — Central and South Los Angeles, East San Fernando Valley, and San Pedro — have seen little new housing construction in the past decade. In addition, school overcrowding has been exacerbated by high rates of housing overcrowding due to the shortage of affordable housing.

We need to make sure we build everything a community needs to be a healthy place to live — new schools, parks and housing.
