What are the facts on growth, planning and development?

Finding information about growth and development in Los Angeles can be a difficult task — but an important one. We've designed this section to help you get the facts on issues such as population growth, housing costs, urban design and planning and zoning. With a better understanding of the facts, we can begin to move towards a consensus on how to solve the affordable housing shortage in L.A.

While there is some disagreement on what the exact numbers will be, almost all experts agree that Los Angeles will experience a great deal of new growth in the coming decades.

While there is little anyone can do to change this, how we handle the growth will have a major impact on the region. We need to make sure that the region is prepared to handle the anticipated number of new residents in the region — with housing, jobs, and infrastructure.

With suburban sprawl at its limits, Los Angeles needs to find new ways of accommodating growth that avoid negatively impacting neighborhoods and the region as a whole.

Ideas like increased density and reliable public transit are becoming more attractive solutions to the problems of high rents and home prices and grid locked freeways. By using these types of smart urban design, Los Angeles can improve its livability while continuing to grow.
