Around Schools

Each of the nearly 500 public elementary and middle schools within the City of Los Angeles should have a map that identifies the recommended walking routes for their students. LADOT works with the school district in developing the maps for new schools and develops updates to the maps as a result of changes in student attendance boundaries, new traffic control devices (i.e. new traffic signal), roadway modifications, and traffic flow. The school should be contacted to obtain their current map.

LADOT staff review existing routes to school and install additional or enhanced traffic control devices when needed. Engineers also address traffic and parking problems at school sites. Traffic Officers enforce parking regulations and in severely congested locations may employ videotaping. Parking violations are mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle, avoiding the congestion associated with the issuance of citations. Department crossing guards are assigned at elementary school crossings meeting criteria for student volume, motorist traffic, and other factors.

The LADOT sponsors a popular program that provides bi-annual bicycle and pedestrian safety training to elementary school age children. About 300 schools benefit from this award winning interactive safety training program each year.

For more information on selected measures, visit LADOT's TIPS (Transportation Information, Programs and Services) page. Normally the affected school, or the school district will contact LADOT to address a problem or request a specific service. However, if you have a question for LADOT staff, simply dial 3-1-1 and a "One Call to City Hall" Operator will put you in touch with the correct LADOT District Engineering Office. The zip code and area of the City where the school is located would be greatly appreciated.
