Traffic calming is a descriptive term that has a range of meanings. It is used in a broad sense in Los Angeles. Traffic calming includes removing potentially unsafe traffic conditions, improving the livability within neighborhoods, and enhancing the environment on major roadways. The traffic calming activities includes engineering improvements, education programs, and enforcement activities.
The LADOT engineers evaluate and develop solutions for nearly 5,000 traffic calming concerns brought to their attention each year. A few of the more common concerns relate to the safety of students on their route to school, speeding on residential streets, cut through traffic in a neighborhood, use of on-street parking spaces, and crashes at an intersection. In response to thousands of notifications annually, maintenance personnel repair damaged traffic signals, replace missing signs, and repaint faded pavement and curb markings. Safety education professionals provide awareness and educational services to schools and community groups. Traffic control officers respond to emergency safety situations, enforce parking regulations, and remove abandoned vehicles. Crossing guards assist students in accessing schools safely.
