Travel Demand Management

Travel Demand Management (or TDM) is the effort to decrease the reliance of motorists on riding alone in a Single Occupancy Vehicle (SOV). LADOT actively provides information to the public on all transportation alternatives in lieu of riding alone. These alternatives include the use of transit, bicycles, walking, and trip planning to avoid multiple trips. Along with providing information, LADOT pursues improvements in these areas by expanding transit service, constructing bike facilities, installing bicycle racks and lockers, installing pedestrian and transit amenities to encourage walking and transit use.

Sharing the Ride

LADOT supports countywide databases that allow commuters to find carpool or van pool partners. The program is currently administered by MTA. More information can be found at Metro's web site.

Specific Plans

In the more congested parts of the City, LADOT administers Transportation Specific Plans which require new developments to give preferential parking to van pools and to car pools. The following link is a map of the 5 City Transportation Specific Plans.

Bikeways

The Department designs and builds bicycle facilities to encourage bicycle commuters and utilitarian trip makers which helps reduce congestion and air pollution. The LADOT Bicycle Program website provides more information.

Transportation Enhancements

Enhancement projects are physical infrastructure improvements that enhance the safety, comfort and aesthetic experience of pedestrians, bicyclists, transit riders, as well as drivers. The goal is to encourage people to get out their autos and take other modes. These projects have included installation pedestrian signals, decorative sidewalks, stamped crosswalks, landscape, bus benches, transit shelters, and pedestrian lighting, and way-finding signage.
