Days of Dialogue Hosting a dialogue

Presidential candidate Bill Bradley (former New Jersey Senator) joined City Councilman Mark Ridley-Thomas at the 1998 Leadership Dialogue at the Getty Center.

Some people will hesitate to host a dialogue because they think it is difficult and time consuming. Neither is true. All that a host needs to do is secure a site and invite participants. We assign a trained facilitator who will conduct the dialogue and work with the host to make the dialogue a success. The specific responsibilities of the host are:

  • Secure and set up a site for the dialogue. Ideally, groups of 10 to 15 chairs should be arranged in circles, if space permits. Theatre style seating can also be used, but will not offer as much opportunity for group interaction.
  • Generate attendance. Invite and motivate your organization, community and/or constituents to attend. Be sure the subject matter and nature of the dialogue is clear to the participants. Consider inviting partner organizations to your dialogue and use signs and flyers to publicize your event.
  • Set the tone and open the meeting. It is important that everyone feel comfortable. Welcome your participants as they arrive. Open the meeting by sharing why you felt this dialogue was important enough for you to host it and introduce the facilitator and turn the session over to him/her.
  • Have participants complete the sign-in sheet and evaluation form. We suggest that you place the sign-in sheet near the entrance. During your opening and closing remarks, please remind people to sign in and complete the evaluation form.
  • Close the dialogue. As the host, you should close the dialogue by thanking people for participating in the process.
  • Collect the evaluation forms and the sign-in sheets and return them to the Days of Dialogue office. The facilitator will assist with this.
