Child Care - Open Child Care Business

WANT TO START A CHILD CARE BUSINESS? Anyone who takes care of non-relative children from more than one family must have a license issued by the Community Care Licensing Division of the California Department of Social Services.

There are basically two types of child care facilities: The Child Care Center or Home Family Care.

CHILD CARE CENTER
A child care center is normally operated outside the licensee’s home and provides nonmedical care and supervision to infants, toddlers, preschoolers and/or school-age children for periods of less than 24 hours per day. These centers are usually in commercial buildings.

FAMILY CHILD CARE HOME
A family child care home is operated in the licensee’s own home and provides nonmedical care and supervision to 14 or fewer children in a homelike environment for less than 24 hours per day.

HOW TO GET STARTED
Attend a Licensing Orientation meeting. Orientation meetings are held monthly. Community Care Licensing has two offices in Los Angeles County, call the Community Care Licensing Office in your area to make a reservation for the next orientation meeting.
