 Promoting Health & Safety in Los Angeles
As a public servant, Councilmember Alarcón has been a champion for community health and safety. As a State Senator, he authored legislation to promote health and safety on numerous fronts – including at the occupational, environmental, and regulatory levels.
Drawing from his own personal experience and death of his infant son in a car accident, Councilmember Alarcon has long advocated for trauma care funding – especially pediatric trauma care funding. In 2006, then-Senator Alarcón introduced SB 1773, a bill that aims to collect funds for the purpose of benefiting local emergency medical services across the state, particularly pediatric trauma care. To date, more than 14 counties have begun collecting revenues under the bill.
Trama Care: Today, as a City Councilmember, he continues his investments in the health and safety of the residents of Los Angeles, particularly for children. In the area of health care for children, he participates in discussions regarding the distribution of the SB 1773 funds. He works with hospitals, the fire department, and other organizations to ensuring that children who are critically injured in the San Fernando Valley receive necessary care.
Health Insurance: Additionally, he created the “Hijos Sanos” program, which aims to increase health insurance enrollment opportunities through the collaboration of schools and government-run health insurance organizations.
Child Safety: In the area of child safety, Councilmember Alarcón introduced motions regarding the increased tracking of sex offenders; the installation of speed humps adjacent to schools, parks, and other facilities primarily used by children; and the study of child safety programs implemented by all departments in the City.
In addition, Councilmember Alarcón makes monthly presentations in City Council to honor individuals and organizations which pursue child safety. He collaborates with these organizations to ensure that child safety measures, such as proper child seat installation and awareness of driving distractions, are implemented throughout the City.
