PUBLIC SAFETY
Public safety is my top priority. We all want to feel safe
in our neighborhoods. We want to know our neighborhoods are
protected and free of crime. Public safety is a team effort
and requires the cooperative efforts of an entire community.
Here is my agenda for improving public safety in Los Angeles:
- Add more police. I support Chief
Bratton’s call to increase the number of officers in
the LAPD by 35%. During upcoming City Council budget hearings,
I will join Mayor Villariagosa in fighting for funds for more
police officers.
- Community policing. We need to use
additional officers to add foot and bike patrols and fully
implement community-based policing.
- Improve the 9-1-1- emergency call system.
No one should ever call 9-1-1 and be placed on hold.
- Upgrade communications. During an
emergency, all local police and fire departments must be able
to communicate with one another.
- Paramedics ambulances at every fire station.
Every community needs paramedics. Currently the Mar Vista
and Pacific Highlands fire stations do not have paramedic
ambulances.
- Create Crime Task Forces. I want
to use my offices to bring police and prosecutors together
with city agencies to focus resources on crime hotspots.
- Improve domestic violence response.
Successful programs that coordinate police response with non-profit
domestic violence counseling should be used throughout the
city.
