EDUCATION

We all have a responsibility to help prepare the next generation to assume productive roles in society. I want to use the influence of my office to make sure that all facets of our city, the school district, the business community and neighborhood groups do everything possible to improve the quality of education and increase and expand services for our children.

Specifically, I want to:

  • Work with the school district to create smaller schools and more innovative magnet and charter schools to give parents and students better options.
  • Develop partnerships between the city and the school district to jointly create libraries, parks, arts projects, recreational facilities and multipurpose centers that can serve both the school and the neighborhood.
  • Promote expanded availability of early childhood education programs and make pre-school available for every four year old.
  • Promote after-school recreation, tutoring, arts, athletic and enrichment programs.
  • Seek to improve and expand programs for at-risk youth, offering them opportunities and alternatives to gangs.
