Gifts to the Collection

The City Art Collection is composed of over 1500 artworks which have been acquired through gift, purchase and extended loan since the beginning of this century. The eclectic collection includes sculptures, paintings, drawings, photographs and textiles. Artworks in the Collection are located in municipal buildings, offices, parks, community centers, libraries and in the former Mayor's residence, the Getty House.

The City Art Collection includes holdings of special interest and focus. This includes plein-air paintings, the Dr. Howard collection of musical instruments, historic furniture, and a collection of portraits of each of the Los Angeles Mayors. In 2002, a project was undertaken through a partnership between Project Restore and the Department of Cultural Affairs to restore the framing of the Mayor's Portraits collection, and provide restorative treatment to paintings in greatest need of attention. Coinciding with the rededication of City Hall in 2002, the portraits were placed in long-term public display on the 26th

floor of City Hall. A publication has been produced highlighting the collection of Mayoral portraits, which can be downloaded here.

All gifts to the City must be approved by the Cultural Affairs Commission. Anyone who wishes to donate artwork must complete and submit an application which is reviewed by the Public Arts Committee, Cultural Affairs Commission and, when necessary, the City Council.

Acceptance into the collection does not guarantee an exhibition opportunity or public display of the work. The exhibition of artworks in a public setting is a separate concern, and depending on the scale of the work, the nature of the exhibition, the time period involved, or the location of the venue, permission may also need to be granted separately by the Cultural Affairs Commission. Works may be exhibited temporarily in public without being part of the collection (a gift to the city).

he application to donate artworks can be downloaded here: "Application for Donation to the City Art Collection"

The guidelines for acceptance of art works submitted as donations are outlined in Department Driective No. 29 and can be viewed by clicking on the following link: "Criteria for Acceptance of Artworks as Donations"
