Origin: Western North America

Species characteristics:
Form - Evergreen. Slow growing in youth, then fast to maturity. A densely symmetrical, pyramidal conifer to 60'.

Trunk - Deeply fissured, fibrous and flaking, reddish brown bark.

Foliage - Vivid green resinous scale like foliage in flattened fanlike sprays that are aromatic and fine textured. Leaves darken on old trees.

Flowers/fruit - Small, yellowish brown to reddish brown cones
3/4 - 1" long. Produced singularly at branch tips. At maturity cones develop hooks and drop off.

No significant pest problems are known at this time. .

Site suitability:
Sunset zones: 1 - 12 and 14 - 24.

Clearances - Suitable for 5' minimum parkways, medians or cutouts.

Good for street sides, medians, parks and lawns.

Culture considerations:
Infrequent and deep watering in youth makes it unusually drought tolerant with age. Tolerates poor soils and summer heat.
