SPECIES
CHARACTERISTICS:
Evergreen, feather palm tree. Moderate growth rate, 30 - 40' in height
with a 10 - 20' spread.
FOLIAGE:
Pinnate frond leaf type, whorled arrangement, 8 - 10' in size. Green
above gray beneath. Each frond is attached to long trunk shaft with
dead fronds dropping off on their own.
FLOWERS:
Perfect; lavender to purple, inflorescence are 2 - 3' long, densely branched.
Flowering Spring through Summer.
FRUIT:
Succulent, indehiscent, round drupe, bright red in color; 3/8" in size.
Late Summer through Fall.
STEM/TRUNK:
Straight, smooth trunk.
BARK:
Gray with leaf scars ringing the trunk.
EXPOSURE:
Full sun, shade; Hardiness: Sunset zones: 21 - 24.
SOIL:
Well drained.
WATER:
Moderate.
FERTILIZER:
Nitrogen, chelated iron, when foilage is chlorotic.
PESTS/DISEASES:
No significant pest problems.
PROPAGATION:
Seed.
USES:
Accent, foliage, foundation planting, right of way, tropical.
