SPECIES CHARACTERISTICS:
Deciduous, tree. Fast growth rate, 50 - 90' in height with 25 - 45' spread. Has an oval to pyramidal shape.
FOLIAGE:
Simple leaf type, altemate, rhombic shape, double serrated margins. 2" wide, 3 - 4" long. The color is bright green above paler below.
FLOWERS:
Monoecious; catkins are green in color, to 6", long. They flower in late Fall - Winter.
FRUIT:
Dry, dehiscent, oval cone. Dark brown in color,
1/4" - 3/4" Fall - Winter.
STEM/TRUNK:
Single straight trunk.
BARK:
Smooth, Gray.
EXPOSURE:
Full sun, partial shade; Hardiness: Sunset zones:
1 - 19, 14 - 21.
SOIL:
Loam, sand, well drained.
WATER:
High water needs.
PESTS/DISEASES:
Mistletoe, tent catepillar, wood borer.
PROPAGATION:
Seed.
USES:
Accent, right of way, screen, shade, specimen, lawn tree, habitat restoration, along stream beds.
