APPELLATE BRANCH
The
Appellate Branch of the Office of the City Attorney represents
the City of Los Angeles in all matters of appeals. City Attorneys
appear before the U.S. Supreme Court, the United States Court
of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, the California Supreme Court,
California Courts of Appeal, and the local Appellate Department
of Los Angeles Superior Court. Appeals and writs are litigated
in state and federal courts, including the Appellate Division
of the Los Angeles Superior Court, the California Court of
Appeal, the California Supreme Court, the United States District
Court and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.
CIVIL
LITIGATION APPELLATE DIVISION
The
Civil Litigation Appellate Division handles all appellate
and extraordinary writ litigation for the Liability Management
Division. Civil Appeals attorneys appear before the U.S.
Supreme Court, the United States Court of Appeals for the
Ninth Circuit, the California Supreme Court, California
Courts of Appeal, and the local Appellate Department of
Los Angeles Superior Court. The Division works closely with
the City's departments and commissions to provide information
and opinions on civil liability matters and serves as a
resource for other Civil Litigation divisions of the Office
of the City Attorney.

MUNICIPAL
COUNSEL APPELLATE
DIVISION
The
Municipal Counsel Appellate Division oversees all appeals
and writs arising out of the Municipal Counsel Branch. The
Division represents the City as amicus curiae in cases concerned
with developing or problematic areas of law with potential
impact on the City. In addition, the Division conducts moot
courts and serves as a resource for other Municipal Counsel
divisions of the Office of the City Attorney.

CRIMINAL
APPELLATE DIVISION
The
Criminal Appellate Division handles all appeals and extraordinary
writs arising out of cases prosecuted by the Criminal, Special
Operations and Safe Neighborhoods Divisions of the Criminal
Branch. Appeals and writs are litigated in state and federal
courts, including the Appellate Division of the Los Angeles
Superior Court, the California Court of Appeal, the California
Supreme Court, the United States District Court and the
Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Cases often present issues
involving procedural and evidentiary errors, constitutional
challenges and the interpretation of statutes and local
ordinances. The Division also evaluates and files People's
appeals and writs to overturn dismissals and other orders
adversely affecting prosecutions by the Office of the City
Attorney. In addition, the Criminal Appeals Division produces
in-house continuing education memoranda and lectures, and
serves as a resource for other attorneys in the Criminal
Branch.
