Film Screening and Q & A: To Touch the Soul
In January 2005, Cal State University Long Beach art
education professor Carlos Silveira took twenty-seven
of his students to Cambodia, where they worked
alongside students from a local university to conduct
art projects involving impoverished children affected by
HIV/AIDS. While grappling with issues including
cultural differences and language barriers, the group
learned the true meaning of kindness, selflessness,
courage, community, and social activism. The
documentary features a mix of diary voice-overs and
interviews with Carlos, his students, and their young
charges, and highlights the growing problem of AIDS
orphans in Cambodia. A Questions and Answers with
Carlos Silveira, Teresa Hagen (producer), and Ryan
Goble (director/editor) will follow the screening.

Terra Cotta Warriors:
Guardians of China's First Emperor
This is the largest loan of terra cotta figures and
significant artifacts to ever travel to the U.S. from the
tomb complex of China's First Emperor, Shi Huangdi
(259-210 B.C.). Considered one of the greatest
archaeological discoveries of the 20th century, the First
Emperor's enormous mausoleum features thousands
of terra cotta warriors that were intended to protect him
throughout eternity. Since their discovery, the terra
cotta army has often been termed the Eighth Wonder of
the Ancient World. The exhibition provides a deeper
knowledge of this historical site and showcases 100
sets of objects, which include approximately 20
complete life-size terra cotta figures representing all
aspects of the Emperor's army.
