The Viet Film Wave: Buffalo Boy

Film Screening and Q & A: To Touch the Soul
In January 2005, Cal State University Long Beach art education professor Carlos Silveira took twenty-seven of his students to Cambodia, where they worked alongside students from a local university to conduct art projects involving impoverished children affected by HIV/AIDS. While grappling with issues including cultural differences and language barriers, the group learned the true meaning of kindness, selflessness, courage, community, and social activism. The documentary features a mix of diary voice-overs and interviews with Carlos, his students, and their young charges, and highlights the growing problem of AIDS orphans in Cambodia. A Questions and Answers with Carlos Silveira, Teresa Hagen (producer), and Ryan Goble (director/editor) will follow the screening.

The Sounds of Bengali Scrolls

Gurupada Chitrakar, a Patua (an artist who paints narratives scrolls and relates the stories of the scrolls through sung poetry), demonstrates this traditional performance genre of India, using scrolls featured in the exhibition Please Listen, People: The HIV/AIDS Scrolls of West Bengal. Kolkata-based folk arts curator Nandita Palchoudhuri translates the performance, and discusses the evolving practice of using scroll painting for HIV/AIDS education.

Terra Cotta Warriors: Guardians of China's First Emperor
This is the largest loan of terra cotta figures and significant artifacts to ever travel to the U.S. from the tomb complex of China's First Emperor, Shi Huangdi (259-210 B.C.). Considered one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of the 20th century, the First Emperor's enormous mausoleum features thousands of terra cotta warriors that were intended to protect him throughout eternity. Since their discovery, the terra cotta army has often been termed the Eighth Wonder of the Ancient World. The exhibition provides a deeper knowledge of this historical site and showcases 100 sets of objects, which include approximately 20 complete life-size terra cotta figures representing all aspects of the Emperor's army.
