I am currently under rabies observation for a possible wild animal bite and will unfortunately need to be under quarantine for 6 months. I am a one year old gray, black, and white female wire Terrier, Chihuahua mix. I was brought to a LA Animal Services Care Center as an injured intact female stray. I could not walk on my right hind leg. The doctor at the West Valley Animal Care Center examined and gave me antibiotics and pain medication and gave supportive care. After I had my right leg x-rayed at one of the Animal Care Centers, the doctor could see the radiograph that showed two bones of my right hind leg were severely broken. I had a completely separated fracture of my femur with a piece of my bone broken off. My right tibia had a complete transverse fracture. The doctor stabilized my broken leg with a bandaged splint. I was in desperate need of surgery, since my fractures were so severe. The shelter could not provide the specialized orthopedic surgery and a referral could not be afforded by the Department’s budget.

LA Animal Services used the STAR Program fund to send me to a board certified veterinary surgeon to repair the broken bones of my right hind leg. My femur had both a bone pin and a bone plate placed and the missing bone fragment was reattached to the femur. My tibia bone had a medullary bone pin placed to allow the fracture to heal. I am so lucky. Not only did LA Animal Services save my life, they saved my leg. Now I am spayed and recovering with the caring doctor and staff at the Animal Care Center, where I am receiving the love, supportive care, antibiotics, pain medications, and physical therapy that I need to recover.
