A VISION OF A DREAM KEPT ALIVE
On behalf of the City of Los Angeles, it is my pleasure to invite you to
celebrate
African American Heritage Month: Honoring the Legacy of
African Americans and Our multiculturalism... A Vision of a Dream Kept Alive.
This month we continue to honor our rich African American culture and highlight the work of artists who keep African American traditions alive and vibrant in our communities.
Take advantage of the countless arts and cultural events – festivals, musical events exhibits, theatrical performances, films and poetry readings – offered through the Department of Cultural Affairs and partner organizations.
I encourage you to look through this site and to stop by our Neighborhood
Arts and
Cultural Centers to celebrate African American Heritage Month.
Very truly yours,
ANTONIO R. VILLARAIGOSA
Mayor
Dear Friends,
The Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) is honored to list the many unique and significant opportunities to participate in this citywide tribute acknowledging the traditions, creativity, legacies, and expressions of African and African American heritage.
These events reflect the diligence and dedication of many people. As we span the City, the work of numerous volunteers and community leaders is evident and much appreciated. We especially want to thank The Walt Disney Company, our Title Sponsor, and Our Authors Study Club for their contributions to this celebration. We are grateful once again for their partnership with Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa's Office and our Department.
A special debt of thanks is also due to all of the organizations that submitted entries for this cultural guide and the artists who have so generously allowed us to showcase their work. In addition, I want to thank my DCA Marketing and Development team for their diligent work in creating all our Heritage Month publications, including this calendar and many of its events. Although the activities in this calendar primarily focus on the cultural heritage, history, and influence of the African American, all of the events are accessible and have universal appeal, reminding us of the perpetual validity of the human spirit.
From the San Fernando Valley to San Pedro, we encourage each of you to consider this publication a kickoff to another year of cultural celebrations in Los Angeles.
On behalf of all the storytellers, artists, historians, writers, and educators who make our heritage come alive to our children, we invite you to join us on a journey that commemorates the cultural traditions and contributions of all Angelenos.
