The Bureau of Sanitation operates a telephone service line to handle information calls and service requests from Los Angeles residents who receive City refuse and recycling collection services.

Residents from throughout the City of Los Angeles may dial toll-free:
1(800)773-CITY / 1(800)773-2489. Hotline hours are Monday through Friday, 7:30 am to 5:00 pm. The Hotline is closed on New Year's Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Callers are first connected to a recording, which directs them in five languages -- English, Spanish, Korean, Chinese and Vietnamese -- to an operator or an Audio Brochure with recorded information menus, which can be accessed by touch-tone phones only. Rotary dialers may hold on the line for the first available live operator.

Recorded messages include separate instructions on how to participate in the Bureau's curbside recycling and automated collection program. Other menus may be accessed for waste reduction tips and to locate a nearby recycling center. Other recycling - related information such as composting is included in the audio brochure.

The live operators provide information on all of the above topics, in addition to handling service requests from residents calling about non-collection of recycling bins or trash containers, dead animal pick-up and bulky item collection. All requests are forwarded by operators to the appropriate Refuse Collection Yard for prompt attention.

CITY operators also have access to 131 languages through Language Line. This allows them to conference call with a translator when they have a resident on the line who needs to communicate in a language other than the five recorded languages.
