City Sewers Future Construction

Air Treatment Facility - Jefferson Blvd.

One of the Department of Public Works’ highest priorities is treating objectionable sewers odors and preventing those odors from entering nearby neighborhoods. The ultimate means for accomplishing this goal is the installation of permanent Air Treatment Facilities (ATFs) at critical locations, where they will be most effective.

How the ATFs work

Odor removal will take place in the ATFs using a two-step natural treatment system with biotrickling filters. The system uses naturally occurring bacteria that "feed" on the odors. Further filtering occurs in vessels filled with carbon that is similar to carbon used in an aquarium filter.  No dangerous chemical will be used.

QUICK FACTS
  • Project location – 6000 Jefferson Blvd.
  • Construction scheduled from summer 2010 to spring 2011
  • Construction cost $14.2 million
  • The project should have very little impact on traffic or access as it is in an off road parcel
