City Sewers Current Construction

Alvarado Crandall Relief Sewer

The City of Los Angeles Department of Public Works will soon begin constructing a relief sewer along Alvarado Street from Bellevue Avenue to Beverly Boulevard and along Beverly Boulevard from Alvarado Street to Rampart Boulevard. The existing sewer was built between 1907 and 1911, and is running at full capacity. The new sewer will divert the flow at Bellevue Avenue and at Beverly Boulevard, relieving the existing sewer.

Whenever possible, the City builds and repairs its sewers with minimal disturbance to the streets and sidewalks, and the neighborhoods nearby. Two methods that are much less intrusive than traditional trenching techniques will be used to build this project. First, on Alvarado Street, a remote controlled tunneling and pipe installation technology called Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) will be used. An entry point south of Beverly Boulevard and an exit point north of Bellevue Avenue will be used for the installation of 2,540 linear feet of sewer pipe. Second, a remote controlled tunneling technique called Micro-tunneling, using several pits on Beverly Boulevard, will be used to install an additional 2,210 linear feet of pipe.
