MAYOR VILLARAIGOSA ON THE CITY COUNCIL DECISION TO RESTORE POLICE HIRING

LOS ANGELES - Mayor Villaraigosa today issued the following statement on the City Council's decision to sustain police hiring at attrition levels in their consideration of the Fiscal Year 2009-2010 City Budget.

"Today the City Council voted to keep our promise to the people of Los Angeles and restore funding to hire police officers.

Public safety is the first responsibility of City government and the core service we provide. It is fundamental to our success as a City. Over the past four years, we have made remarkable gains - marked by falling crime rates, gang violence on the retreat and safer neighborhoods - and we cannot afford to take a step back on public safety.

I thank the Council for keeping our commitment to Angelenos."
