OurLA... Featuring Water for Tomorrow
Mayor Villaraigosa, City and environmental leaders unveil a plan to ensure water continues to flow in Los Angeles for the next 20 years.
In the midst of a statewide drought, the Mayor unveiled a far-reaching water plan to meet growing demand through unprecedented water recycling and increased conservation.
Representing a $1.5 billion investment, the plan lays out many incentives for Angelenos to reduce water use and introduces an innovative recycling program, through which the City will conserve enough water to fill the entire San Fernando Valley with 1 foot of water.
In order to promote conservation, City water restrictions will be more strongly enforced, and free “smart sprinklers” will be distributed to every Los Angeles home.
OurLA... Featuring Partnership for LA Schools Clean-up
Roosevelt High students beautify their campus. Hundreds of students, parents, and community members planted trees, repainted classrooms and hallways, and put up a mural.
Kicking off a summer of community-driven cleanups at our Partnership Schools, hundreds of volunteers painted, cleaned and updated Roosevelt High School and Santee Educational Complex.
The cleanups are in preparation for the beginning of the school year on July 1, when Roosevelt, Santee, and eight other L.A. schools are set to transition from LAUSD to the Mayor's Partnership.
OurLA... Featuring Green Building Ordinance
Mayor Villaraigosa signs into law a groundbreaking green building ordinance on Earth Day. The innovative and comprehensive plan sets L.A. on course to reduce its carbon emissions by more than 80,000 tons by 2012.

Summer Pool Season
The Mayor joins Council President Eric Garcetti and Kaiser Permanente representatives to kick-off the 2008 swimming season at the Hollywood Pool. Kaiser Permanente's "Operation Splash" offers free swimming lessons to over 8,000 low-income families.
Beat the Heat this Summer:
Take a swim - Visit one of the City's public pools, accessible to all residents and free for kids!
Read a book - Do some summer reading at the library.
Hit the beach - Find one of our many area beaches.
Eat light - Fruits, vegetables and salads are easier to digest and keep you hydrated in heat.
Park it - Have a picnic and enjoy the shade at the City's many public parks. Some offer live entertainment, free swimming lessons and plenty of space to play.
Plant a tree - Get a free shade tree for your residence! In partnership with Million Trees LA, the DWP's Trees for a Green LA program offers free shade trees.
Strategic cooling - Let out heat at night or when the temperature is below 77. For window fans, face the blades outside to suck warm air out and pull cooler air in.
Desert trick - Hang a damp sheet in an open window when the air outside is dry and cooler than the inside. The incoming air will be cooled by evaporating water.
Cook smart - Save cooking for cooler hours, or cook outdoors.
Spice it up - Eating hot and spicy food can cool you down. Chili peppers contain a chemical compound that helps us sweat. When the sweat evaporates, we cool off.
