Since 2002, Neighborhood Councils have provided important input to the development of the City policies and building neighborhoods. Look at the incredible work going on in our Neighborhood Councils.

 

 

Message from Veronica Padilla, Pacoima Neighborhood Council President

 

On behalf of the Pacoima Neighborhood Council (PNC) and the Pacoima community, we are honored to be in the inaugural spotlight. Thank you to the City leaders who had the vision and courage to create and support the councils. We will not disappoint.

 

And thanks to our past president, Jorge Quezada for his dedication, passion and tutelage in 2007, when we were able to expend more than $89,0000 on community projects, which included:

 Where We Are

Tucked between the Golden State, 118 and 210 freeways in the Northeast San Fernando Valley, the Pacoima Neighborhood Council area is bordered by Foothill Blvd and Hansen Dam to the Northeast; the Pacoima Wash and the City limits to the Northwest; Branford St. and Hansen Dam to the Southeast; and the Golden State Freeway to the Southwest.

PNC at Work 

 

February, 2007 

 

PNC’s inclusion in creating a benefits package from the biggest development in Pacoima called the Pacoima Community Benefits Agreement Partners, including funding of (2) two community outreach events at which food for 150 people was served and 20,000 flyers distributed. Because of the community’s efforts the developer was held to a higher standard of environmental clearance and was asked to fund local childcare and affordable housing programs. The community also had an opportunity to choose a contemporary design, which reflects the design of other local developments.

 

 

 

 

 

April, 2007

 

Voted to support DWP/NC MOU to establish an oversight committee and appoint a representative. Because of the increasing rates of DWP and the rumors of wrongdoing, the PNC felt it was necessary to get involved and informed.

 

 Establishment of a website for informational and outreach purposes.  www.pacoimanc.org. The website was important to show who our boardmembers are, what we do, where and how often we meet, and upcoming and current projects.

 

 Creation and funding of an annual Latino Heritage, Black History, and Disability Awareness events, with the 2nd Annual Pacoima Fiesta held Saturday, October 13, 2007.  Total funding was for $20,000.  The 2nd Annual Pacoima Fiesta was a huge success and drew over 700 people to the event.  The event was a Latino Heritage Month event and included mariachi, ballet folklorico, danza azteca, and a well-known cumbia band called Internacional Sonora Show.

 

May, 2007

 

 Voted to financially collaborate with Ritchie Valens Battle Fest 2007, which was a battle of the bands for young and upcoming bands within the Greater Los Angeles Area. Winners of the event were given $500 and 8 hours of recording time in a recording studio.

 

Created a prototype Curb-Painting program, through which volunteers paint new address numbers on curbs in order to make it easier for emergency, post office, and delivery vehicles to find home addresses. 

Financially supported the purchase of 15 computers (including LCD screen, tower, and keyboard) for our local senior center, the Alicia Broadus Multipurpose Senior Center.

 

 

 

 

 

 

June, 2007 

 

Financially supported the Salute to Recreation event that drew close to 40,000 participants. The PNC agreed to pay for event brochures and volunteer t-shirts. 

Created and planned Pacoima’s 1st Annual Juneteenth event at Hansen Dam Park.  As a part of the event, there was an essay contest, food from local vendors, and games. 

 

Financially supported the purchase of 15 computers (including LCD screen, tower, and keyboard) for our local senior center, the Alicia Broadus Multipurpose Senior Center. 

 

July, 2007 

 

Decision to push for an Environmental Impact Report (EIR) over a Mitigated Negative Declaration (MND) from the expansion of a local hospital, Providence Holy Cross Hospital.  Because of the PNC’s experience from the Price Pfister development, we had a general knowledge of the difference between a MND and an EIR. Pacoima, with the help and knowledge of Pacoima Beautiful, is going green and it is reflected in new and upcoming developments. 

 

Funding of a local mobile multi-media recreational vehicle by local community-based partner Heroes of Life.  The PNC financed the program for $10,000.  In the program, 10 mobile computers were installed in an RV and travels to different parts of our community, including middle and high schools and senior centers.

 

August, 2007

 

Collaborated with local charter school Discovery Preparatory Charter School.  The funding was for a summer school program at which students learned about environmental issues.  And, as Pacoima becomes a green community, it’s extremely important that our community’s youth carry on the proverbial torch.

 

November, 2007

 

Financially supported a local drill team, San Fernando Gardens Drill Team, for the purchase of new uniforms which allowed them to perform at the 40th Annual Pacoima Holiday Parade.  Cost was $1,000.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

December, 2007

 Funded the 40th Annual Pacoima Christmas Parade for $10,000.  PNC funded the ability to have two well known artists play after the parade at Ritchie Valens Park.  

Financially supported the 1st Annual Iraq War Fallen Soldier Memorial, which depicted in print and video fallen soldiers of the war in Iraq.  Throughout the 5-hour event, volunteers read off the names of all of the fallen soldiers.
