The gun buyback program will offer $100 and $200 gift cards for weapons turned over to police at 20 sites citywide
“We are calling on all L.A. residents to join us in securing a safer City for every family by imploring individuals to turn in their guns. It’s our chance to take matters into our own hands and prevent the next tragic shooting and the next unnecessary murder.” –Mayor Villaraigosa
The citywide gun buyback program will take place on May 9, 2009, and will reward the voluntary surrender of firearms, while engaging our communities towards a common goal of reducing gun violence. Individuals turning in firearms will receive a $100 gift card for Ralph’s grocery store per handgun, and a $200 Visa gift card per higher caliber weapon.
A component of the Mayor’s 2009 Gang Plan, the gun buyback program will work with intervention workers as well as community and faith based organizations to heighten awareness of the dangers of gangs and guns.
In partnership with the LAPD, City Attorney’s Office, LA County Sheriff’s Department, and community and faith based organizations, the gun buyback effort will secure 20 neutral locations throughout the city where individuals can surrender their firearms—no questions asked. The 20 locations will be accepting firearms from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
Last year alone, more than 1,500 Angelenos found themselves caught in the cross hairs of gun violence, and 65% of the bullets came from a gang member’s gun.
