How Do I Obtain a Permit?

Depending on the type of work being performed, a plan review (plan check) by a department plan check engineer may be required prior to issuing a permit.

Permits requiring plan check are issued after the plans have been reviewed and approved by the Department. More information on the plan check process is provided on this site.

For permits that do not require plan check (Express Permits), a permit can be obtained at any of our Express Permit counters located in our Construction Service Centers , via facsimile (Fax Permit) , or online using our e-Permit program.

Window and door change-out (same size & type)
Permit to comply with department order (general rehabilitation only)
Kitchen remodel (no structural changes)
New stucco, re-stucco, replace drywall
Re-roof with class A or B material weighing less than 6 pound per square foot
Termite damage/dry rot repair less than 10% of replacement cost of building
(non structural)
Complete work done under previously expired permit (Minimum 75% percent completed as determined by inspection)
Installation of security bars for dwellings/apartments
Change of ownership/contractor
Fire damage repair (maximum 10%, no structural)
Anchor bolting/bracing foundation per L.A. Standard Plan
(Houses, residential buildings up to 3 stories and up to 4 units)
Chimney repair for residential buildings (per city standard details)
Replacement of damaged framing members (less than 10%)
(Houses and duplexes)
Repair of water, dry-rot or termite damaged stairs in residential buildings (Less than 10%)
Permits to repair decks for houses and duplexes (less than 10%)

Replacing a/c unit (a/c compressors) with same size & type
Duct work alteration or addition in buildings that do not have smoke control system
Relocation of a/c equipment and non product conveying fans within the same building
Addition of a/c equipment up to 5 tons and non-product conveying fans up to 2000 cfm in existing buildings
