Scientific research now demonstrates that the Earth’s climate is warming at an unprecedented rate, with a growing body of evidence pointing to humans as largely responsible for enhancing the Earth’s natural greenhouse effect and accelerating the rate of global warming.  Activities causing this warming to occur include the burning of fossil fuels for transportation and industrial operations – which results in the emission of the heat-trapping greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2) – and the destruction of carbon-sequestering forests.

This matters because rising global temperatures, if not dealt with, could result in significant impacts in Los Angeles, including flooding of low-lying property, loss of beaches and coastal wetlands, saltwater contamination of coastal underground drinking water supplies, a rise in ground-level ozone (which aggravates existing respiratory ailments), and increases in heat-related illnesses.
