Background: The City’s Brownfields Revitalization Program provides assistance to a wide range of individual development sites throughout the City of Los Angeles. The Brownfields Site Assistance Work Program, under the direction of the Brownfields ExeNewton Stationcutive Team, is carried out by the Brownfields Resource Team, consisting of senior staff from the Environmental Affairs Department, the Community Redevelopment Agency, the Community Development Department, the Mayor’s Office of Economic Development, and the Chief Legislative Analyst’s office. Additional staff assistance is provided by the U.S. EPA and the Army Corps of Engineers. Program assistance falls under six primary categories: On-Call Technical Assistance; Exploratory Site Assessments; Major Economic Development Sites; Special Purpose Capacity-Building Sites; Brownfields Demonstration Sites and Showcase Community Matching Fund Sites; and Showcase Community Matching Fund Sites.

The purpose of the Major Economic Development Sites category is to generate economic development and job creation at specific major development sites. Funds will provide technical assistance for major economic development sites at an advanced stage in the development process and possibly for limited financial assistance for site cleanup activities. To provide flexibility in responding to project needs and to encourage project progress, funding allocations have been pooled and will be allocated to sites on an as-needed basis. All projects in the category will, at a minimum, receive the Brownfields Site Information Report and on-call technical assistance. City Council must approve any allocation of funds over $100,000.
