CHILDREN'S NATURE INSTITUTE’S FREE VOLUNTEER TRAINING COURSE Are you interested in leading nature walks for small children?  Attend the Children's Nature Institute's five-week training course Saturdays, October 22 through November 19. Share your love of nature and lead nature walks for young children at trails in Malibu/Westside, San Fernando Valley, San Gabriel Valley, South Bay and Ventura. At this training, participants will learn from expert naturalists about native mammals, insects, birds, reptiles, plants and local Native American’s connection to nature. Learn to interpret and lead activities for children eight years and under and their families. Babysitting is available and young children are welcome. Los Angeles Department of Water and Power TEACHER WORKSHOPS FALL 2005 These free fall 14 workshops take place from October until December 12 for teachers in grades K-8 at four LAUSD Math, Science and Technology Centers. Teachers should check with each LAUSD Math, Science and Technology Center to arrange for possible salary point credit (LAUSD teachers only) or honorariums. Seven different topics will be covered including electricity and magnetism, ecology, water, renewable energy, Think Earth, holiday lights and environmental investigations. Each workshop has a different grade level designation. The Roundhouse Marine Studies Lab & Aquarium Open House
Come to the free "Back to School Open House" for all teachers, parents, PTA and more. This event will be an opportunity to learn about the education programs the Roundhouse has to offer you and your classroom. Meet the education staff, participate in some of the hands-on field trip activities and see our newly improved facility. Learn about our new classes including a class focused on coral reef and a habitat. See the possibilities offered through the Roundhouse's amazing offsite program at the tidepools. During the evening there will be tours of the aquarium, and a free raffle where to win various prizes including a free fieldtrip. SPOOKY NOISE MAKERS IN THE NIGHT HIKE This two-mile hike will be hosted by one of the Santa Monica Mountain's Conservancy naturalists who will reveal the spooky noisemakers in the night. Come and experience nature at night. The hike is one mile. For more information please call the Mountains Conservancy at (310) 454-1395 ext. 106. The hike takes place from 6 pm to 8 pm.  Meet at Temescal Gateway Park, 15601 Sunset Blvd., Pacific Palisades 90272 in the front parking lot. Free; $5 parking fee.

NATIVE OAK PLANTING Join TreePeople volunteers in another phase of woodland restoration at the north end of the San Fernando Valley. They will be planting native coast live oak and valley oak trees along a popular recreation and hiking area. Last Child in the Woods: Richard Louv at the Aquarium of the Pacific Join author Richard Louv as he discusses his newest book Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder. Louv will explain how the lack of nature in the lives of today’s generation results in disturbing childhood and adult trends such as the rise of obesity, attention disorders, and depression. In his critically acclaimed book, he talks to parents, child-development researchers, environmentalists, teachers, religious leaders, and scientists about this phenomenon in addition to offering solutions. CAMPFIRE Come celebrate the campfire tradition, including stories, songs and marshmallows with staff from the Santa Monica Mountains Nature Conservancy. This campfire will include a naturalist led program explaining the fire ecology of the Santa Monica Mountains. Bring a jacket. Used Book Sale and Storytime at  Central Library Find bargain children’s books for sale. Sponsored by FOCAL, Friends of Children and Literature. The book sale takes place at the Taper Courtyard from  10 am to noon. At 2 pm, attend Storytime and Puppet Show in the KLOS Theater to watch “Spiders We Know and Love,” a web of tales about unique spiders. Stay for a terrific puppet show. Autumn Sea Fair Celebrate our local ocean from 10 am to 4:30 pm at the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium (CMA). Games, contests, music, exhibits, demonstrations, arts & crafts, films, videos and more will be featured and sold. Enter the sand sculpture contest, hunt for buried pirate treasure, and help select the 2005 Queen of the Sea (contest open to all). Pack a picnic or purchase food and drink. Admission to the fair is free. Beach parking ($7) is limited, so the Aquarium encourages people to use the FREE park-and-ride provided at 22nd and Miner Streets. 2nd Annual Science and Technology Awareness Day Kids of all ages can appreciate Science and Technology, learn about careers in these fields, and find new science project ideas at this event held in Exposition Park.  This event will make kids and their families aware of the importance of engineering, science, and mathematics.  Kids also will have opportunities to perform hands-on science activities based on fun!  Free. Scarium of the Pacific Join the Aquarium of the Pacific for a spooktacular Halloween event for the whole family. Families will learn about the scary and not-so-scary animals that inhabit the ocean, while enjoying special Halloween programs. Activities include magic shows, spooky storytelling, a display of decorated pumpkins, children’s coloring contest, and a variety of educational and fun crafts.
