GENERAL EVENTS
Environmental Affairs Department (EAD) Calendar of Events - Many up-to-date listings of local events and activities relating to the environment. The following events are sponsored by the Department of Public Works (DPW), Bureau of Sanitation (BOS):
BOS Conditionally Exempt Small Quantity Generator (CESQG) Collection Events - If your business generates less than 27 gallons or 220 pounds of hazardous waste per month (e.g., paints, solvent, aerosol cans, photographic chemicals, asbestos, etc.), you may be eligible for this affordable solution to hazardous waste disposal. To find out if your business qualifies, or to obtain an event schedule and make a drop off appointment contact BOS at (800) 98-TOXIC or (800) 988-6942.
BOS Household Hazardous Waste and Oil Collection Events - For certain hazardous wastes that are generated at home (15-gallon limit per vehicle). No fee and no appointment necessary. When the program is active, residential waste oil collection events are also scheduled (20-gallon limit). For further information contact BOS at (800) 98-TOXIC.
PUBLIC OUTREACH WORKSHOPS
Pacoima Beautiful - HTM Office, EAD: Joint "Environmental Best Practices" workshop for Spanish-speaking and other auto shop owners and employees in the northeast San Fernando Valley - 5/17/00.
Los Angeles Urban League - HTM Office, EAD: Joint "Environmental Best Practices" workshop for Urban League Automotive Training Center students, local Korean-speaking and other auto shop owners and employees in south-central Los Angeles - 6/15/00.
"Partnership for a Cleaner L.A." Video Tape - HTM Office, EAD: A companion video for the above-listed workshops was produced in 2001. It describes the auto shop outreach program. Hosted by Ed Begley, Jr., the video explains how to best collaborate with local regulators and community-based organizations in presenting "Environmental Best Practices" to local auto repair businesses. The video will air on City View (Channel 35) on April 12, 2001 at 2:30 p.m. It will repeat on April 26th at the same time and then be played at various times in May. Copies are available to representatives of local community-based organizations, non-profit environmental groups, and government offices - 3/1/01.
Pretreatment Program Compliance Workshop - HTM Office, EAD and IWD, BOS: What to do when a good treatment system goes bad": A pollution prevention workshop for metal finishing businesses and other wastewater discharge permittees was held. Associated guidance documents were distributed to businesses in attendance -- 11/10/01.
Mercury Reduction Project - HTM Office, EAD and BOS: The Hazardous and Toxic Materials Office worked with the City's Bureau of Sanitation and a local non-profit group, Physicians for Social Responsibility, to conduct a mercury reduction and pollution prevention educational outreach project. Key personnel at local health clinics were educated as well as clinic patrons. Mercury-containing clinic and community equipment were successfully exchanged for non-mercury containing equipment. Non-city projects funds were obtained from the U.S. EPA and Kaiser Permanente - 12/1/01.
Auto Salvage Yard/Auto Repair Outreach Project - HTM Office, EAD: A pollution prevention educational outreach project is being conducted for salvage yard operators and local auto shops. Outreach is concentrated in areas with a higher proportion of auto salvage yards and shops. Contact is being made on a site by site basis, through trade associations, and via radio advertisement. Educational methods include equipment demonstration, samples, resource aids, and onsite consultation - 7/1/02.
CITY WORKSHOPS/PROJECTS
Alternative Cleaners Demonstration Project - HTM Office, EAD: Selected water-based cleaners were performance tested at various City facilities. An executive summary and associated report were distributed to participating City departments. The Executive Summary is available via the U.S. EPA Region IX internet site. The full report can be ordered from the HTM Office - 8/30/99.
Alternative Auto/Janitorial Products Project - HTM Office, EAD: - Ongoing survey of auto and janitorial products used at selected City Departments. Less toxic alternatives are being researched. Upon completion, project fact sheets will be available to participating departments and distributed at associated outreach events - 6/30/01.
Stormwater Best Management Practices (BMP) for Various Industrial Facilities - HTM Office, EAD: Ongoing BMP research for cooling towers, greening projects, boilers, water softeners, dewatering and parking structures. Research also includes preparation of a matrix of associated references. Final research results will be forwarded to the City's Stormwater Management Division for review and/or distribution - 6/30/01.
Industrial Wastewater Discharge Guidance Documents - BOS, DPW and HTM Office, EAD: Pollution prevention guidance documents are being prepared for toxic organics management and industrial wastewater pretreatment. Guidebooks will be distributed at outreach events for the industrial wastewater permittees - 6/30/01.
POLLUTION PREVENTION WEEK
September 16 - 22, 2002: Pollution prevention week is observed nation-wide. It is a week during which businesses, government and the community can learn about and demonstrate the many different ways to prevent pollution.
