City
HIV/AIDS Policy
In 1990, the AIDS Coordinator's
Office spearheaded the development of the City of Los Angeles'
first comprehensive AIDS Policy. The Policy served as a blueprint
for the City's multi-pronged effort to combat AIDS.
Today the AIDS Coordinator's
Office continues to take a leading role in HIV/AIDS policy issues
affecting the residents of Los Angeles. This role includes advising
the Mayor and City Council on HIV/AIDS policy questions, implementation
and oversight of City HIV/AIDS policy, and collaboration with community
organizations to formulate policy strategies.
Recently the
AIDS Coordinator's Office worked with the Mayor's AIDS Leadership
Council to create a white paper entitled "HIV and AIDS in Los
Angeles: 21st Century Challenges and Approaches," which was
presented to the Los Angeles City Council in December 2003. The
white paper summarizes key HIV/AIDS issues faced by the City today
and outlines ways for Los Angeles to reinvigorate its HIV/AIDS policies.
This document will guide the AIDS Coordinator's Office as it continues
its mission to prevent the spread of HIV and improve life for residents
living with HIV/AIDS.
