Ombudsman
The Ombudsman program provides residents of long-term care facilities with an independent
and objective source of help in resolving problems within each facility. The Ombudsman
examines the facts associated with the complaints made by the resident and attempts
to resolve the situation as quickly as possible. Family members, friends, facility
staff, and persons representing community organizations may also request assistance
from the Ombudsman for problems affecting the resident. If resolution cannot be
effected, referral is made to a legal service agency and possibly a regulatory
agency, the Deputy District Attorney or the court if the situation involves a
conservatorship. Confidentiality is scrupulously maintained. The program also
assists in the witnessing of Durable Power of Attorney for health care and can
provide public information to interested persons, as available, about local long-term
care facilities, and how to select an appropriate facility.

Elder Abuse Community Education
The Elder Abuse Community Education program has been designed to increase public education
and awareness in identifying elder abuse, those persons/populations at high-risk,
how to report abuse, and available community resources to prevent abuse and assist
caregivers. The program also facilitates countywide meetings of the multi-disciplinary
Fiduciary Abuse Specialist Team (FAST).
