Emergency Alert Response System (EARS)
E.A.R.S is a medical communications and personal security system connected to a senior's home
telephone. When the senior is in distress, he/she presses a button worn on their wrist or around
the neck. This activates communication with an operator at the response center through a speaker/
microphone built into the unit. No telephone has to be picked up and the senior can activate the
communication from any room in the home.
In an emergency, help is sent immediately. Important medical information is relayed to paramedics
and emergency room personnel to assure appropriate and timely treatment. A battery backup allows
operation even during a power failure.
E.A.R.S. is a federally subsidized program restricted to people who meet these qualifications:
- 62 years of age or older
- Reside in the city of Los Angeles
- On a fixed income meeting eligibility requirements
- Frail and Homebound
- Live alone
- Participate in Care Management program of local Multipurpose Senior Center
To apply, a senior or caregiver should call the Multipurpose Senior Center closest to the senior's
home and request a home visit assessment by a Care Manager. The Care Manager will fill out the
application for E.A.R.S. and mail it to Dept. of Aging for determination of approval for the subsidy.
Seniors who do not qualify for the subsidy may contact our vendor for a discount to pay privately for this service.
