Neighborhood Empowerment

It is my goal to empower neighborhoods, to build the capacity of grassroots leaders to advocate for the betterment of their communities. Government can only do so much by itself. To really succeed, our city needs residents and government working together. We need a comprehensive system of neighborhood councils with real powers to affect policies in the city. We also need to make sure that no neighborhood goes untouched or unnoticed by government, that we train a new generation of leaders in civic advocacy.

Councilmember Eric Garcetti launched the CD13 Neighborhood Leadership Academy to train neighborhood residents to become effective advocates for their community. Since 2001, hundreds of emerging leaders have participated in Academy workshops, which give residents information and resources to organize and bring real change to their neighborhood.

In addition, Councilmember Garcetti is committed to a strong, vibrant, and representative system of neighborhood councils (map).
